Education Success Stories
IT choices in education are increasingly complex yet do offer amazing, creative opportunities such as the mobile technology of the iPad. These stories of Western working in the education sector show the journeys some schools have taken to successfully embrace new technology.
"I've really found the partnership with Western Computer very positive and productive."
- John Wells, Headteacher - Clevedon School, Somerset
Clevedon School, a North Somerset comprehensive for 11 - 18 year olds, looked carefully into mobile technology before choosing the iPad. Crucially, they were looking for a solution to help them achieve their educational goals, and one that worked ‘every time, every day and first time’. Clevedon saw the real potential of mobile learning, from enabling independent learning to solving issues such as access to IT suites.
“We felt it was important to get advice from experts and invited Western Computer to talk to us.” says Headteacher, John Wells. Over time, the school gradually introduced iPad into various curriculum areas. Now it is available as a choice everywhere from classroom to science lab to school fields. Teachers can create and customise their own content to match learning styles.
With iTunes U courses, students have been able to work at their own pace or choose a topic to stretch themselves with. “They are so independent with it, it’s really transformed their learning.” says David Chart, Assistant Subject Co-ordinator for Maths.
In addition to support and learning sessions delivered by Western, Clevedon now has its own unique support team. Key students, nominated as ‘Digital Leaders’, run regular help sessions for students and staff.
“I’ve really found the partnership with Western Computer very positive and productive.” says John Wells. Deputy Headteacher, Jim Smith, adds, “It’s a credit to Western that they’ve enabled us to deploy iPads in a way that we know fits our learning journey.
